Water-Soluble Q10 vs Ubiquinol Softgel: Which Has Better Bioavailability?

Water-soluble Q10 bioavailability is significantly superior to ubiquinol softgel, as demonstrated by a landmark clinical study. A 2020 study by Professor Pravst compared the bioavailability of water-soluble Q10 versus ubiquinol softgel capsules in healthy elderly individuals, with striking results. (Pravst 2020)

Water-Soluble Q10 Bioavailability Outperforms Ubiquinol Softgel Capsules

The researchers concluded that the key to effective CoQ10 supplementation lies in enhancing its bioavailability. The bioavailability of water-soluble Q10 was found to be 2.4-fold higher compared to conventional powder Q10, while ubiquinol softgel capsules showed no significant increase over the baseline. (Pravst 2020)

The trial used a single-center, randomized, three-period crossover design, which is considered the gold standard for bioavailability studies. Participants received a single dose of 100 mg of CoQ10, and all three formulations: water-soluble Q10, ubiquinol softgel, and generic Q10 capsules were tested in each participant.

The crossover design is particularly valuable because it eliminates between-group differences that can occur in parallel study designs. By using each participant as their own control, the study minimizes variability and produces more reliable bioavailability data.

CoQ10 is a lipophilic molecule with a relatively high molecular weight, making it poorly soluble in water and therefore inherently difficult to absorb through the intestinal wall.

In summary, Professor Pravst’s study clearly demonstrates that water-soluble Q10 has superior bioavailability compared to ubiquinol softgel capsules. Notably, Q10 appeared in the bloodstream predominantly in its ubiquinol form, even when taken as ubiquinone, confirming that the body rapidly converts ubiquinone to ubiquinol after absorption.
